The Joy of Learning Mathematics

For many students, maths is a phobia at par with the fear of snakes, lizards, elevators, water, flying, public speaking, and heights. Though the “ailment” is neither genetic, nor infectious, they “inherit” it from their parents; and “catch” it from their friends. What are the reasons behind maths’ dreadful reputation that divides the society into mathematical “haves” and “have-nots”?

“One reason why students fare badly in Maths is that they are learning it mechanically, often not understanding what they are learning and they are unable to apply it to real-life situation,” says Vijay Kulkarni, the leader of the First Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) released recently by the well known Bombay-based non-governmental organization, Pratham.

How to Make Math Fun and Easy to Learn

When a child has a tough time learning math, he can start to get a little scared of it. If he’s scared of it, then he has a harder time concentrating on it and has even more trouble with it. The more trouble he has, the more scared he gets. This can be a tough cycle to break, but fortunately it can be done.

The easiest and best way to relieve a child’s anxiety about learning math is to make it fun for him. If you can turn it into a game, then chances are it won’t be scary any more. Learning math just becomes part of the child’s play time and he doesn’t even realize that he’s learning.

Learning Advanced Math and Some Philosophy on That

Far too many American Students get freaked out when it comes to higher mathematics, or advanced placement classes in High School. Interestingly enough, Chinese students do not seem to have the same problems. Some students assume that the Chinese are just smarter than Americans, but that clearly is not so.

You see, in China the students learn some 45,000 symbols and characters during their schooling. In the US the students are not required to learn many symbols at all, and the ones they do learn are fairly simple things like pie, and other symbols used in math classes.
